How do I calculate how many shelf pusher lanes and facings I need per shelf?
A:Lane count comes from width, facing depth comes from turnover: usable shelf width ÷ lane width gives the lane count, then set each lane about 3 to 4 facings deep for medium-turnover SKUs and 1 to 2 deep for slow movers.

Four-step lane calculation
- 1Measure usable shelf width, not nominal shelf width — subtract end clearances and any fixed divider zones.
- 2Pick the lane width from your widest SKU in that family, then add 2 to 3 mm clearance per side so products do not jam.
- 3Divide usable width by lane width and round down; that is your lane count.
- 4Set facings per lane from turnover: fast movers 1–2 deep for frequent refill, medium movers 3–4 deep, promotional items 4 or more.
Typical lane width by product family
| Product family | Lane width | Facing depth |
|---|---|---|
| Cans and jars (300–400 ml) | 60–75 mm | 3–4 |
| Boxed goods and cartons | 100–130 mm | 2–3 |
| Bottles (0.5–1 L) | 90–110 mm | 2–3 |
| Pouches and bagged snacks | 140–180 mm | 2–3 |
Condition to check before you order
Lane width must clear the widest package including any handle, cap or promotional sleeve. If one SKU is much wider than the rest, give it its own lane rather than widening every lane — otherwise you lose shelf space across the whole bay.
