VIGO DISPLAY × Swishables: Custom Hanging Merchandise Strip for Liquid Mouthwash Sticks
A pre-filled mouthwash stick is a narrow strip of flexible film with a single dose of liquid sealed inside. Swishables’ packaging already has a hang hole — the top seal is punched with a euro hole, because it was built to hang on a peg from the first day. So the problem was never “can it hang”. The problem is that one peg holds one stick: sold as singles, six sticks need six pegs and six lengths of crossbar, and the shopper only ever reads the one in front. What the brand needed was one strip that carries six individually wrapped sticks on a single hook and tells the whole range story at once.
The Brand: Mouthwash That Gave up the Bottle
Swishables is a US oral care brand built on a single argument: mouthwash does not need a bottle. The product is a pre-filled mouthwash stick — tear the top, swish for 15–30 seconds, spit. One stick is one dose, alcohol-free and dye-free, with a three-year shelf life, in two flavours: Mint Nirvana and Spearmint Bliss. The pack is a flexible film sachet, not a plastic bottle.
That format decides how it retails: as a single. And single-unit retail runs on one rule — one peg, one item. Six sticks therefore mean six pegs and six lengths of crossbar. The euro hole on the pack already solved “can it hang”; it did not solve “can one position tell one story”. That gap is why a strip exists, and it is where this project started.
Before they came to us, the brand had already spoken to several display and packaging suppliers. The conversations stalled on specifics: off-the-shelf strips are designed around pouches — 60–90 mm bag mouths, loaded into welded clear pockets — while this stick is 40 mm wide and already has its own hang hole. The printers who could handle full-bleed black did not die-cut narrow strips; the die-cutters only ran white or clear stock; and those willing to quote wanted tens of thousands of pieces.
Four Requirements That Ruled out the Stock Options
1. Off-the-shelf strips are built around a bag mouth, not a hang hole
The standard pocket strip holds product in a welded clear pocket, sized for snack bags and blister cards. A 40 mm stick rattles around inside one, and since the pack already has a euro hole, adding a PVC pocket discards that hole and puts a film of plastic between the shopper and the artwork.
2. The strip has to carry the brand, not just the product
The packaging is matte black with a green leaf, deliberately premium. Hung on a clear PVC strip it reads as hardware. For a brand whose whole argument is film instead of plastic bottles, adding another plastic sleeve is a contradiction on the shelf. Swishables wanted the strip itself to be the printed surface: header, both strips, both sides, black to the edge.
3. No assembly in the store
No retailer is going to stand at the fixture loading six sticks into pockets. Anything fixed with tape or clips comes apart the first time a shopper picks one up. The requirement was: loaded at the factory, hung in one motion, one stick removed without disturbing the other five — and nothing touching the seal.
4. Small order, real engineering
A new format has to be tested in a handful of stores before anyone talks about a container. But the expensive part — a die line reverse-engineered from an existing hang hole, the fit between tongue and hole, a board that stays straight at 485.5 mm under six sticks — is exactly the work most suppliers save for volume orders. Several quotes died on tooling cost and MOQ alone.
What Was Already on the Market, And Why Each Option Failed
Hanging display strips are a mature, crowded category. The difficulty is not making a strip; it is holding a narrow flexible sachet that already has a hang hole. Five formats cover almost everything available:
| Strip Type | How It Holds the Product | Why It Fails Here |
Welded PVC pocket strip | Product loaded into a clear welded pocket, one per position | Pocket width is set for bags; a 40 mm stick folds and turns inside it, and the existing euro hole disappears behind a reflective film |
Spring-jaw hanger | A spring or fixed jaw gripping the pack edge | The jaw lands exactly on the punched seal; over time the seal creases and the hole edge tears first when a shopper pulls |
| Adhesive strip | Pack stuck to the board face | Stuck means not removable; peeling takes the print with it, and in a warm store the adhesive lets go before the stock does |
| Wire hook strip | A row of metal hooks, product holes over the hooks | Holds the weight, but exposed wire cannot be printed full-bleed and reads nothing like a matte black pack |
| Printed board die-cut strip | Slots die-cut in the printed board itself; the product hole goes straight over | Requires a die line built around the pack’s hole position and diameter — and one supplier who both die-cuts and prints full-bleed. That is JL-82B. |
The Brief We Rebuilt with the Client
We did not open a catalogue and quote a model number. We rebuilt the brief with Swishables into something that could be drawn as a die line: six sticks per strip, all facing the shopper; the pack’s euro hole used as-is, nothing covering it, nothing added over it; both faces of both strips and both sides of the header printed; hangable on a standard pegboard hook or crossbar; shipped flat and hung as delivered; and stiff enough at 485.5 mm under six sticks that it does not bow under its own load.
The Solution: Turn the Hang Hole into Structure
The answer was not a wider pocket, and not another fixture over the pack. JL-82B works the other way round: the product already has a hole, so the strip grows the structure that goes through it. The whole unit is one material — printed board, with the slots die-cut out of the board itself. The stick hangs on the board, not inside anything.
One header card, two strips
A single 139.7 × 88.9 mm header card carries two parallel 40 mm strips, 485.5 mm overall, with a 149 mm slot pitch. Splitting the load into two narrow strips rather than one wide panel buys three things: six loaded sticks stay within the rating of an ordinary peg hook; the sticks fall into two clean columns — two columns of one flavour for visual weight, or one flavour per column, the brand’s call; and the gap between the strips makes the display read as six separate products instead of one black slab.
The M-shaped slot: tongue carries, shoulders locate
Each position is an M-shaped cut-out die-cut in the board — a centre tongue, with a radiused slot on either side of it, the whole outline reading as an M. The euro hole at the top of the pack drops over the tongue, so the weight of the stick rests on the tongue; the two radiused shoulders hold the seal on the centre line of the strip. Six sticks hang in a straight line instead of drifting left and right.
That is fundamentally different from gripping. The slot never touches the seal — it only passes through the hole that was already there. To take a stick, no prying and no pulling: support the body, lift, and the hole clears the tongue. The hole edge is not rubbed, the seal takes no crease, and restocking is the same motion in reverse — the strip stays on the fixture and gets refilled rather than replaced.
Header card and first slot: the euro hole sits on the M-shaped tongue, the body hangs in front of the printed face — hole, artwork and wordmark all readable at once.
Why M-shaped, not a straight slit or a U-slot
Three cuts cover it, and the trade-off comes down to two things: whether the pack can be located, and how much material the cut leaves in the strip.
● Straight slit. A hole on a straight cut carries the load, but nothing along the slit stops the pack sliding: hang six and one sits straight while the next drifts. Both ends of the slit are also stress risers, and on a soft film that is exactly where the hole edge splits after repeated handling.
● U-slot. Open at the top, product drops to the bottom of the slot under its own weight — fine on a wide panel. On a 40 mm strip a U-slot leaves too little material either side, and 485.5 mm under six sticks bows.
● M-shaped slot. The tongue takes only the vertical load, in the plane of the board — the direction where board is strongest in bending. The radiused shoulders only locate; they carry nothing. The cut area is smaller than a U-slot, so the 40 mm strip keeps its material. One shape answers both “will it hold” and “will it hang straight”.
Two strips, three M-shaped slots each. The slots are cut straight into the printed face — no welded pocket, no adhesive, nothing for the store to assemble.
Print and surface
The unit is full-bleed matte black: both faces of both strips, both sides of the header card. The header carries the wordmark and flavour name at eye level, plus a small reproduction of the pack itself, so a shopper three metres away knows what the strip is selling. Between slots the strips repeat the leaf graphic, which means the display still reads as the brand from an angle, from behind the header, or stacked behind another unit. Matte rather than gloss is a deliberate echo of the pack, and it keeps the spotlights from washing out the shelf.
Slot detail: centre tongue and both radiused shoulders cut in one pass, clean edges, no fuzz to catch the pack.
Board edge: print runs right up to the radius and the cut face is clean with no burr; the pale line on the edge is the core of the laminated board itself.
Hanging hardware
The header is punched and fitted with a metal hook that turns freely. That detail matters more than it looks: pegboard hooks are rarely level, and a fixed hanger leaves the unit permanently crooked. A free-turning hook lets the strip find its own vertical — the difference between a display that was installed and one that was merely hung up.
Metal hook through the header punch: free to rotate, so the strip self-levels on a pegboard hook or crossbar.
From Artwork File to Approved Sample
1. Measure the hole first, draw the die line second
Before touching any print file we had the client’s pack in hand: hole position, hole diameter, seal width — all measured, and only then a decision on tongue width and slot height. The die line went back to Swishables, whose designer worked to the same numbers: 139.7 × 88.9 mm header, 40 mm strips, 149 mm pitch. Slot position, header height and the punch were fixed geometry from day one instead of something to correct after the first proof.
2. Prove the slot before proving the colour
The first round was a white sample — die-cut only, no print. A tongue that looks right on screen can be too wide to enter the hole or too narrow to carry a filled stick, and a few degrees off on the shoulder radius is enough to hang the pack crooked. We loaded all six positions with real filled sticks, left them standing, then took them off and hung them again, and only moved to colour once the hole edge stayed put.
3. Printed samples in 7 days
Within a week, printed samples went out — matte black, both sides, six real sticks in place. The brand could hang it in an actual store under actual lighting instead of judging a flat file on a screen.
4. 25 days to production after approval
Production completes 25 days after sign-off. At 100 pcs the brand can put the format into stores and test it, instead of committing to a container.
What Changed at Retail
The finished unit adds no new fixture to the store — it uses the hook that was already there. What it changes is what one hook can do:
● Six facings from one hook. A 40 mm-wide unit presents six sticks in two columns; hanging singles as before, six sticks need six hooks.
● Not one extra hole in the pack. It uses the euro hole the pack already has — no pack redesign, no sticker, no secondary packaging.
● Zero assembly in store. Loaded at the factory, hung in one motion. For a product a store associate has never seen, that is the whole difference.
● Singles come off without wrecking the display. Taking one lifts its hole off its tongue; the other five do not move, so the strip does not get combed through in a trading day.
● Restock without replacing. The strip stays on the fixture; open a new stick and hang it back on.
● Shipped flat. Strips ship flat with nothing loaded, so freight volume is a stack of board rather than a box of pre-hung air.
Why Brands Come to VIGO DISPLAY for Custom Strips
We start from the pack, not the catalogue
A strip for snack pouches and a strip for 40 mm liquid sticks are two different objects. We measure the hole, then draw the die line, then quote.
Printing and die-cutting under one roof
Artwork guidance, die line, cutting and printing move together, so changing one slot does not restart a conversation with a second supplier.
Small runs are normal here
100 pcs per design. A new format has to be tried before it is scaled, and our pricing does not punish that.
Retail display only
Strips, shelf fixtures, price holders and POP, shipped to more than 100 countries. The problem you bring us usually already has a die line on our floor.
Specifying Your Own Hanging Display Strip
If the product you need to display is narrow, flexible, or already has a hang hole, we need six answers before drawing a die line. Send them through the inquiry form and you usually get a die line and a quote in the same round:
● The pack’s real outside dimensions — filled, not flat film.
● The type of hang hole (euro hole, round hole, or seal only), its diameter, and its distance from the top edge.
● Filled weight per unit, and whether the film relaxes enough to distort the hole.
● How many units per strip, and whether you want one column or two.
● Where it hangs: pegboard hook, crossbar, or wall bracket.
● Which faces must carry print, and whether the surface should be matte, gloss, or matched to the pack.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for a custom hanging display strip?
100 pcs per design. Tooling and structural changes are quoted separately, but both catalogue and custom designs start at 100 pcs.
What if the product has no hang hole?
It still works, but the approach changes: the pack gets a card header, or the strip uses a spring jaw that grips the seal. A hang hole is the simplest case — nothing changes on the pack and no consumables are needed. JL-82B was built for a pack that already had a euro hole.
Can it be adapted to a different stick or pouch size?
Yes. Tongue width, shoulder radius, slot pitch and header proportions are all rebuilt around your pack. The JL-82B die line is specific to this mouthwash stick, not a stock tool.
What are the lead times?
Samples in 7 days, 25 days to production after approval. Sea freight 20–40 days, air 5–10 days, express 3–7 days.
Can different flavours or SKUs share one strip?
Yes, and it is usually worth it. The six slots can mix flavours, or the two strips can carry different artwork on a shared header — particularly useful for seasonal or limited editions alongside the core range.
The Takeaway
A hanging strip looks like a stock item until the product refuses to be a stock item. Swishables’ problem was not a pack without a hang hole; it was a hang hole that could only carry one unit at a time. The answer was not another fixture over the pack, but a strip that grows its own structure: a board printed black to the edge, die-cut around a hole that already existed, into six M-shaped slots, hanging from the hook that was already on the wall. That is the difference between holding a product and selling one.
